Monroe zoo applies to get license back

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (AP) - Monroe's Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo could regain its exhibit license by this fall if it passes a United States Department of Agriculture inspection.

The zoo lost its exhibit license this year after the director and his staff failed to mail the zoo's annual renewal application to the USDA by deadline. That means Monroe's zoo will be evaluated as if it were a brand-new facility.

The director said he submitted the zoo's new application during the past 10 days and the USDA, which governs the nation's zoos, has a 90-day period to conduct up to three inspections.

He said the zoo will have to pass at least one of the three inspections to regain its exhibit license.
