Artist picked for Governor Beebe portrait

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A Garland County artist has been picked to paint the official portrait of outgoing Gov. Mike Beebe.

Beebe says he and his wife, Ginger, chose Ovita Goolsby to paint the farewell portrait. It's the first time in 35 years that a new artist has been picked to paint the official governor's portrait.

The previous five portraits have been done by artist Nancy Harris, who now lives in Williamsburg, Virginia. Beebe says his wife selected Goolsby because she wanted an Arkansan to paint the portrait.

Goolsby has been a portrait painter for the past 35 years. She teaches portraiture and life drawing at National Park Community College in Hot Springs.

The portrait will likely be unveiled toward the end of the year.
