Meridian changes rule on restaurants and alcohol

Posted: Updated:

MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - Some restaurants in Meridian can legally start serving beer, wine and cocktails to customers dining at outside tables.

The city council recently changed the rules that regulate alcohol consumption on public streets.

Michael Goggans, a former city attorney, says the change allows alcohol to be served at tables that restaurants put on sidewalks just outside their buildings.

City Councilman Dustin Markham says this does not mean people can walk up and down a street with a drink in hand. He says the change will help businesses that want to expand their offerings.
