Habitat warns of fake employee

Posted: Updated:

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The New Orleans area chapter of Habitat for Humanity is warning about a scam in which a man has claimed to be a Habitat employee to gain entrance into homes in the city's Gentilly neighborhood.

The impostor Tuesday claimed to be checking to see if a resident needed repairs to the home. The agency says he used the resident's name, carried a folder with papers in it and said Habitat had received money from FEMA for repairs so he was "checking to see what work was needed."

Nothing was stolen, nor was anyone injured.

Habitat for Humanity says it does not solicit homeowners for repairs by going door-to-door or making unsolicited calls. It said residents should call police if approached in such a manner.
