A Monroe church congregation takes its deacons to court

Posted: Updated:
MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Members of the Zion Spring Baptist Church of Monroe literally went from the church house to the court house.

The members of the church say they want the deacons out and new leaders in. Ever since April the church has been split.

"We have deacons at this church that has come in and just took over the church and we have no say so in whatever that's going on," Zion Spring member Jacqueline Kendrick said.

The night of April 14. members were suppose to have the meeting to vote the deacons out of their leadership positions. However, the doors of the church were locked, and the locks were changed. The deacons even changed the name of the church and got a new charter.

"On April 14. when they named it Zion Spring Missionary Baptist Church all of those members who were members of the church prior to that have no membership," Zion Spring member Juanita Miller said.

We attempted to get a comment from the deacons of Zion Spring, they refused to make a comment. Miller believes their silence comes from knowing they are wrong.

"Many of these people do not know that you can not set up a corporation in an existing building," Miller said.

That's why Miller says the resolution is simple.

"Take your charter and your corporate paper and go and find you a building."

As of now the church does not have a pastor and continues to hold services under the deacon's leadership.

The original members are hoping a judge can answer their prayers to return the church to them.
