Colombia extradites 7 accused of killing DEA agent Terry Watson

Posted: Updated:
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - Seven Colombians accused of involvement in the stabbing death of a U.S. drug agent from Rayville have been handed over to American authorities.

The men were delivered to U.S. officials Tuesday at a police base in the capital city of Bogota.

The men have been indicted in the U.S. on charges that they murdered 43-year-old DEA agent James "Terry" Watson in Bogota. Authorities say they posed as taxi drivers, and were trying to take Watson on what's called a "millionaire's ride," in which criminals force victims to remove cash from ATMs.

U.S. and Colombian officials believe the 2013 killing was unrelated to Watson's drug enforcement role.

The suspects are expected to stand trial in Virginia. Their families are protesting that they did not have an opportunity to say goodbye to the men.

RAYVILLE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Hearts are still heavy a year after DEA Special Agent Terry Watson was murdered in Bogota, Columbia.

At a memorial dedication his efforts to defend his country were compared to the likes of a hero.

Watson was stabbed to death while getting into a cab, several taxi drivers were part of a robbery ring and were not connected to watson's job as a drug agent.

Special Agent in Charge, Keith Brown didn't know Terry Watson very well. However, he understands the commitment DEA Agents put on the line while on missions away from their families.

On one of the memorial benches it reads, "in valor there is hope." That's what Brown wants for Watson's richland parish family to get from this special place.

Terry Watson was a son, husband, and friend. More importantly a father.

"If you're a father struggling and you want to show your child your son or daughter the way forward. How to be a great and honorable man bring him to this park and show him the life of Terry Watson," Keith Brown said.

President Calvin Coolidge's words, "the nation woh forgets it's defenders will it's self be forgotten."

Carved in stone proof that Terry Watson will always be remembered.

The DEA tells us six suspects will be charged with Watson's murder.
