Tallulah City Council talks about reducing mayor's salary

Posted: Updated:
TALLULAH, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Before Paxton Branch becomes Mayor of Tallulah, his city council is already proposing to cut his pay.

"We always felt that the mayors salary was a bit high for our area," City Councilman Tommy Watson said.

The mayor's salary stands at $60,500, that's more than the Mayor of Lake Providence at $46,000, and Rayville at $53,000. It blows Winnsboro's Mayor Jackie Johnson out of the water, he makes $30,000 a year.

Watson believes if the cut is made the money saved will go to good use. He says the police department is in the most need.

"Last year we had to layoff five police officers because of a short fall in our budget," Watson said.

Watson believes Mayor-Elect Branch is willing to take a cut for to improve areas in need.

"Indirectly others have told us that he didn't have a problem with that, with the reduction," Watson said.

Watson says any disputes over the mayor's salary will be solved peacefully.

"I really do see as these rough edges trying to make this transition. So once this transition is made things will smoothen out and we'll be ok."

The city council will discuss the proposed move again at the next city council meeting, July 10.
