U.S. judge approves breakup of Stephens School District

EL DORADO, Ark. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - A federal judge has approved the breakup of the Stephens School District, which will split among three other school districts next week.

U.S. District Judge Susan Hickey issued an order Wednesday that approves the division of the Stephens district among Camden-Fairview, Magnolia and Nevada County. Earlier this year, the Arkansas Board of Education ordered the breakup of the Stephens district because its enrollment fell below the state minimum of 350 students.

According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (http://bit.ly/1lYSra1 ), the education board sought federal approval of the plan because the Stephens district is a party in a decades-old desegregation case that has never been dismissed.

The Stephens district wanted the district consolidated only with the Nevada County district, but the education board declined to do so.
