Ruston Aldermen Elmore Mayfield dies at 70

RUSTON, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Longtime Ruston Aldermen Elmore Mayfield has died. He was 70.

Lincoln Parish Coroner Dr. Mike Belue says Mayfield died from sudden cardiac arrest.

He died at Northern Louisiana Medical Center late Monday night.

Mayfield represented District 2 for 21 years.

Mayfield grew up in Ruston. He spent 33 years teaching at Ringgold High School in Bienville Parish before retiring in 2001. He became an alderman in 1993, filling the unexpired term of former Aldermen J. R. Stringer.

Mayfield never faced any re-election opponents.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Mayfield's survivors include his wife and three daughters.
