Ambulance crew killed in fiery crash

LEAKESVILLE, Miss. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The Mississippi Highway Patrol says two members of an ambulance crew died in an accident with an 18-wheeler in Greene County.

The ambulance was headed to a call on Mississippi 63 Tuesday when it crashed into a semi-truck near the Piave community.

Barfield said the crash occurred after the ambulance, with its red lights flashing but no siren sounding, attempted to pass two 18-wheelers carrying loads.

He says the ambulance passed the first truck, but hit the second truck, driven 47-year-old Charles E. Bexley when he tried to turn left. Both immediately burst into flames.

Greene County Coroner Ladd Pulliman says the names of the dead are being withheld pending their positive identification from the Mississippi State Crime Lab.
