Arkansas special session put on hold

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe says plans to call a special session are on hold after legislation to address rising teacher insurance premiums was changed in a way that could affect the school funding formula.

Beebe told reporters Tuesday he's told legislative leaders he doesn't support a version of the legislation that would transfer expected tax savings from the districts by altering the school funding formula. Beebe said he had agreed to transferring the money in a way that wouldn't change the formula.

House and Senate leaders told lawmakers Monday Beebe planned to call a special session beginning June 30 to address teacher insurance and prison overcrowding. Beebe said he didn't know who had changed the legislation from what was originally circulated to him and lawmakers.
