Miss Louisiana Week: Day 1

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The 32 contestants vying for the title of Miss Louisiana 2014 have completed their first day of pageant week.

That crowing moment is what each of the contestants is striving for Saturday night.

Monday, the girls were officially welcomed to the Twin Cities at a press conference. Each of the pageant's sponsors were thanked, and Mayor of Monroe Jamie Mayo offered the organization a check for $25,000.

The girls, a little nervous and eager for the competition to start, each introduced themselves. Current Miss Louisiana Jaden Leach says she remembers being in their shoes.

"It's crazy because I'm not used to being in this position," says Leach," I'm used to being one of the contestants, so watching everyone else with their nerves and anxiety is a breath of fresh air really."

The contestants are ready to put the nerves behind them, and get to work as Miss Louisiana. They want the title, not just for the crown, but for the scholarships that come with it. As future doctors, lawyers, teachers, these girls are hoping for the $10,000 scholarship that comes with the Miss Louisiana title.

"The scholarships have completely paid for my school," says Leach, "I will graduate not only with my Bachelor's, but my Master's, completely debt free, and all of these girls that compete this week will leave with a scholarship, so no one leaves emptyhanded."

Day one was easy, but as the week goes by and the competition heats up, Leach has one piece of advice: "Better yourself, improve yourself, but don't change yourself."

For those watching the pageant, here's her tip on picking your Top 5: "Choose your top 5 based on that charisma, the one that you would want your daughter to look up to as a role model and the one that you think would truly make the best Miss Louisiana."
