Airbus delivers new copters for Miss. troopers

COLUMBUS, Miss. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - An Airbus Helicopters Inc. AS350 B3e AStar was delivered Tuesday to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.

The new law enforcement-equipped helicopter was built in Columbus, where Airbus employs nearly 300 people.

The Department of Public Safety paid for the AS350 B3e by selling its fleet of older helicopters.

Gov. Phil Bryant says the helicopter is a welcome addition to the state's law enforcement tools.

Company officials say the AS350 B3e's multi-mission capability for patrol, drug eradication and hurricane support was a good fit for the Highway Patrol requirements.

More than 220 Airbus Helicopters AS350 AStars are operated by U.S. law enforcement agencies.

Captain Ron Kelly, commander of the Highway Patrol Air Wing, says the AS350 B3e helicopter was chosen due to its functionality, value, performance and payload capability.
