Winnsboro council meeting ends with Alderman being escorted out

Posted: Updated:
WINNSBORO, La. (KNOE 8 News) - At tonight's meeting of the Winnsboro Town Council, several issues on the agenda were never discussed after the meeting got out of hand and one councilman was handcuffed and escorted out.

It started when some residents wanted to ask questions regarding the town's financial records, but Mayor Jackie Johnson said there was no time for public questions or comment.

Things started heating up when Alderman John Dumas, District 2, continued on the subject of budget, but the mayor asked him repeatedly to stop talking.

The councilman refused to stop talking saying "I'll stop, when you stop."

That's when the mayor asked police to arrest the councilman, who was then escorted outside in handcuffs.

The meeting fell apart at that point. The mayor walked out, and police came back inside turning off the lights asking everyone to leave.

Our crews spoke to several people with the animal shelter who were upset with the meeting ending. Issues regarding the kill shelter were on the agenda, but never addressed.
