Ex-insurance agent hopes to clear name

Posted: Updated:

OXFORD, Miss. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - A former insurance agent is asking a federal judge for speedy consideration of his motion to vacate his conviction related to an insurance scam involving Lafayette County.

Ken Nowlin pleaded guilty in 2007 to conspiracy charges related to his dealing with former Lafayette County Supervisor Gary Massey. Nowlin was sentences to 30 months in prison.

After serving his sentence, Nowlin filed a lawsuit in 2010 arguing he was coerced into plead guilty. U.S. District Court Judge Sharion Aycock dismissed the case.

Nowlin is now asking for an expedited hearing to consider vacating his conviction.

Nowlin argues prosecutors failed to prove a federal conspiracy. He argues the board of supervisors received no federal funds related to their decision-making on the county employees' health insurance plan.
