Monroe applying for beautification grants

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Parts of the city of Monroe may soon get a face lift. Mayor Jamie Mayo plans to apply for grants to continue the beautification project on Louisville Avenue.

Driving over the Louisville Bridge, crossing into Monroe, you may notice it doesn't look as clustered as it did a few years ago. Mayo says that all thanks to a beautification project.

"We were able to do some projects from the bridge to Sixth Street. You have some sidewalks. You have lights there, as well as some utilities buried under ground," Mayo said.

The mayor said the city is now applying for grants to continue the project. They want to do the same kind of work from Sixth Street on Louisville all the way to the intersection of Kansas Lane and Desiard Street.

But there are some concerns with the funding.

"In fact the matching amount for the city of Monroe is 20 percent in this grant and it was only 5 percent in the previous grant. So there are some changes,” Mayo said.

The federal government will cover the rest of the cost. And parts of South Grand will also benefit.

"We want to make it attractive not only for the businesses that are there, but also for potential businesses that will be locating in that particular area," Mayo said.

Denman Engineering is the consulting firm for this project.  They tell us it's too early to project an estimate for the projects. Mayo said it's likely to cost the city a lot of money.

"We're just going to have to wait and see what that cost estimate is and the engineer will have to make that determination," mayo said.

Mayo said when the projects are done it will be well worth the investment.

These grants will only cover the sidewalk replacements and new lightening. It's up to the utility companies to bury their own lines.
