DOMO moniker given to Downtown Monroe

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News/City of Monroe) - Buoyed by the success of the downtown Monroe RiverMarket, the Downtown Monroe Alliance (DMA) is moving to build on the resurgence of energy, renewal and opportunity evident again in the downtown district.

“With the support of Mayor Jamie Mayo, our city council, local entrepreneurs business community and many volunteers, the Downtown Monroe RiverMarket has proved to be a successful catalyst for the new vitality we are seeing downtown,” said Myra Gatling-Akers.

Gatling-Akers, who is also Executive Director of the Downtown Economic Development District, attributed a boost in residential and business investment in the district and on-going substantial support from local, public and private groups committed to the effective development of this sustainable economic hot spot.

The group introduces its new DoMo (pronounced DoeMoe) campaign designed to encompass all on-going downtown redevelopment efforts as a single body of work with its own public trademark and image. Heath Lord, a volunteer for downtown development, suggested that we use DoMo. Other cities such as lower downtown Denver uses LoDo and the famous New York neighborhood SoHo, DoMo is a contraction of the words downtown Monroe.

Experience DoMo is the name of a new magazine which highlights the people, places, events and stories growing out of the remarkable birth of the business and residential area which spreads east from the Ouachita Riverfront. “Inspired by development campaigns in larger cities, we wanted DoMo to be an over-arching representation of Downtown Monroe. The idea is and will always be to honor the downtown’s rich history, yet continue to develop the area as the contemporary cultural hub of Northeast Louisiana,” said Loretta Collins.

DoMo is the official rebranding of all of downtown Monroe. We are asking for businesses and organizations to start referring to our downtown area as DoMo. The Downtown Monroe Alliance organization will include banners for display, t-shirts and other logo bearing materials in addition to the magazine to help further enhance this premier sector of the city.
