Monroe Commerce wants City Council to consider another paper to be city journal

Posted: Updated:
MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Many people still find time to read a newspaper every now and then, Monroe readers are privileged to have four to decide from.

However, only one can be the official journal that is appointed by the city council.

The present journal is the Monroe Free Press. Sue Nicholson of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce would like to see them replaced.

"There are some business leaders who have had to delay projects because reporting wasn't done in the manner it needed to be done," Nicholson said.

Monroe Mayor, Jamie Mayo doesn't have a say on which paper can serve as the city official journal.

He  would  like to see a change from the weekly free press to a paper who has a daily operation.

Mayo didn't say which paper he would like to se take over as the city journal. The News Star has held the position in the past.

However, Nicholson would like The News Star get the job back. She hopes the city council votes in the best interest of the city, replacing The Free Press.

"We don't understand why that should be the journal of record. our hope is at the city council meeting tomorrow evening that council will decide not to renew
that contract with The Free Press," Nicholson said.
