Saline sheriff pleads not guilty to felonies

Posted: Updated:
BENTON, Ark. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - A former Saline County sheriff has pleaded not guilty to charges of theft of property and abuse of public trust.
Bruce Pennington was in court Monday. He is accused of accepting free granite countertops in return for helping a man avoid community service and of taking money from inmate calling-card kiosks to pay court fees in a separate case.
Pennington was one of three people charged after legislative auditors raised questions. Special prosecutor Cody Hiland says more charges could follow.
The ex-sheriff resigned last year after pleading guilty to alcohol-related charges after an arrest at a Benton restaurant. He filed to run for sheriff this year, then tried to withdraw from the race. He finished last in the May primary.
