LA Technical College clearing the air

Posted: Updated:
RUSTON, La (KNOE 8 News) -It's about time they put it out, that's what Louisiana Tech sophomore Jared Spiller said after learning about the new campus tobacco free policy.

"Most people that actually die from cancer and things like that...they die from second hand smoke, so I think it will be a good thing because it will keep people from smoking on campus and help it be a healthier campus" said Spiller.

Spiller said he never smokes, but he can't say the same for everyone else.  With Act 211 of the State Legislature, that will no longer be a problem.

Spiller said maybe if students, faculty, and staff members had to walk across campus to smoke, it will make them a little less likely to want to light it up and take a puff.

Every secondary educational institution in the state has to develop a smoke or tobacco-free policy, no one including visitors will be able to smoke in and/or around campus facilities.  Tobacco Free Living manager Jennifer Haneline said this policy prevents future problems.

"When we have young adults coming into colleges...their trying out a lot of different things, trying to figure out what their going to do in life, if they experiment with smoking at such a young age.  They are very likely to become addictive to smoking and being a person who smokes for the rest of their life" said Haneline

Most students are excited about the new plan, but for others, well not so much.

LA Tech student McKinley Williams says he's not a big fan of it, he thinks it's unconstitutional and as long as you're at a designated feet away from the buildings, you should be able to smoke where ever you want.

Jared Spiller said he's just glad the state is taking his side and action to improve campus health.
