Ruston mayoral candidate to focus on economics & education

Posted: Updated:

RUSTON, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Businessman Bill Elmore has formally announced he is running for mayor of Ruston.

Elmore said his campaign will focus on economic development, lessening red tape, assisting in Ruston’s prosperity, and working with secondary and post-secondary area schools to prepare students for work opportunities in Ruston and throughout the world.

“I want to help move Ruston in a direction to not only create job opportunities but to make Ruston a place residents will be proud to reside in and can work and live for years to come,” Elmore said.

Elmore held a meet and greet June 3 at Ruston’s historic firehouse to announce his candidacy, and many community members attended the event.

“I am running for mayor because of what is right in Ruston -- not running about what is wrong,” he said. ““I know how to manage and work with people. I have the experience that this city needs to grow and prosper and create opportunities for our young people so they can have a career and raise a family here. I know how to get things done.”

Elmore has started and led numerous businesses in Ruston, including hotels, a home health agency and psychiatric hospitals. He has served as president, vice president and board member for the Rotary Club of Ruston, served as president and board member of the Ruston/Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau, was instrumental in the organization of 4-PAWS and helped establish the Sheriff’s Citizens’ Observer Patrol, where he serves as deputy commander.

Elmore, a Tech graduate, is the second Republican candidate who is running to replace current Ruston mayor, Dan Hollingsworth. He previously served as VP of marketing for West Texas Utilities in Abilene, Texas, and was vice president of marketing and business development for Central and Southwest Corporation, a Fortune 500 company based out of Dallas, Texas. He received a PMD from Harvard and is married to his college sweetheart, Norma. Bill and Norma Elmore have three children.
