New fire station for Monroe Fire Department

MONROE, La (KNOE 8 News) -Fire Chief Terry Williams and Monroe officials dug shovels in the ground, hoping what will soon be built, will better prepare them for emergencies like Tuesday's plane crash.

"This particular facility will be more functional as far as assisting and providing those services...in addition, it's going to enhance the living accommodations for our crews and equipment as well" said Williams.

Williams said they received two million dollars from the state to build a new fire station, it will reduce response time, something he says would have really helped.

"First of all I would say the air waves are busy...and over a period of time...we have those type of events...I don't know if you can remember we just had another crash in Richwood and another on Mel Haven...small planes...so this new station and the equipment that we have is going to really enhance our ability to immediate those situations as well" said Williams.

After FAA investigators collected their last pieces of evidence from the crash scene. The Monroe Fire Department will now take over.

"The National Transportation and Safety Board are the ones who will remove the plane from the site...after the plane is removed...we will them release the property back to the property owners" said Williams.

City Council woman Betty Blakes says these type of emergencies are why the new fire station is so important.

"It will be within our confinements and therefore if something happens at the airport or in the city...they will only take but a few minutes to get to it" said Blakes.

Just in case two emergencies happen at once, firefighters will have the equipment they need to respond to both.
