CALDWELL PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) -Levees are getting a check up, if they fail, it could mean bigger flood insurance bills for those living near them.

The Tensas Basin Levee District is trying to secure cash to fix the levy in Caldwell parish before it's up for inspection and re-accreditation.

The levy located on Lee lane is the last of the six bank cave-ins that need to be repaired.

Tensas Basin Levee District has secured an estimate of nine hundred thousand dollars for construction plans in order to meet FEMA's standards to prevent an increase in flood insurance rates for home owners

Tensas Basin Levee Supervisor Tracy Hilburn said once funding and plans are approved, it should take about four months for repairs to be made.

"We are doing everything on our end...going back and forth with the corps of engineers as well as FEMA to make sure that we're doing everything that's required on our end so that when it's time for them to come back with the accreditation process, but everything is driven with dollars" said Hilburn.

The Tensas Basin Levee District hopes with the Water Resource Development Act, funds to complete levy projects will draw into the district and prevent insurance rates from increasing.
