MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Guns have been a hot topic among lawmakers this legislative session and continues to be a big a target for conversation with gun owners.

Governor Bobby Jindal just signed a bill that narrows when homeowners can use lethal force and explains when you can pull the trigger to scare off an intruder.

The bill no longer allows people to use force if an intruder is on the premises. The intruder now needs to be inside or trying to enter the dwelling place, business or automobile.

Gun safety instructor rodney denton supports the change.

In a New Orleans case a 16 year old boy was shot in the head after he crossed a fence onto a homeowners property, he survived.

Assistant District Attorney Neal Brown says even though the changes seem to limit a homeowner's rights it will help make cases more clear cut.

Rodney hopes the newly signed bill will push more people to become educated gun owners, so they can provide another layer of safety for themselves and their families.
