Ouachita Parish remains the same with LEAP scores

Posted: Updated:
MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Louisiana's leap scores are out. Ouachita Parish Superintendent Bob Webber said with the transition to Common Core, this year has been a little more difficult. But he said the scores reflect some serious hard work.

“It’s a little different for Ouachita Parish. We rank very high already, so growth doesn't come in such huge steps like maybe some of the schools that were a little lower," Webber said.

Last year, the district received a “B” in school performance. Webber said he hopes that will improve when new performance scores are handed out in the fall.

"Right now the proposed standard, for the two year transition period, for school systems and schools themselves, is to not go down a letter grade, but possible go up," Webber said.

But the school board didn't mention the Leap scores at this meeting. Instead, they talked about the budget, pay raises and score boards.

The board voted to build the new East Side Middle School on the Swartz Fairbanks Road. Kenneth Slusher said this site has less traffic than the others and the board is getting it for a better price.

"We were able to get 50 acres for future expansion. And the price was $10,000 an acre, which was $20,000 cheaper than any other price we had received," Slusher said,

The board also agreed to give substitute teachers a slight raise. They said compared to surrounding districts, Ouachita parish was paying much less.

And West Monroe High School will get a new score board. It's expected to run the school at least $500,000. The school board will shell out $200,000 and loan West Monroe High School the rest. West Monroe plans to pay back the loan by selling advertisements on its new score board.
