LaFourche council to determine video poker ordinance

Posted: Updated:

THIBODAUX, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The Lafourche Parish Council will discuss a measure that would restrict the location of any new off-track betting businesses.

The council will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Mathews Government Complex.

The measure would prohibit any business with more than three video poker machines from locating within a mile of any National Register of Historic Places site, public playground, residential property, church, synagogue, library or school.

Council support was mixed as of Friday.

Councilmen Jerry Jones and Phillip Gouaux said they currently don't support the proposal.

Jones said he's still researching the issue but believes the parish should leave the state law as it is.

The parish's only off-track betting location is in Thibodaux.
