At least 16 shot in New Orleans over weekend

NEW ORLEANS  (KNOE 8 News/WWLTV)– The Memorial Day weekend has been an extremely violent one in the city of New Orleans as at least 16 people have been shot since Friday. The most recent shooting happened around 3:30 Monday morning. Three people were shot at the intersection of South Johnson and Perdido streets. Police say four people were sitting in a vehicle when a second vehicle pulled up and began firing. One man was shot in the back, two woman received graze wounds from bullets in their arm and leg, and a second man was not injured in the shooting. The three victims were taken to the hospital where they are said to be in stable condition.

In New Orleans East, police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead. It happened just after 8 p.m. Sunday near Chef Menteur Highway and America Street. When officers arrived, they found the victim lying on the ground. He had been shot several times and later died at the hospital.

Three people are also recovering Monday morning after they were shot outside a home on the Westbank. Authorities say the three men were standing outside a home in the 1700 block of Hero Street when someone walked up and started shooting at them. The three men are listed in stable condition.

Then around 5:30 p.m., Sunday, another shooting happened in New Orleans East. This time, the shooting happened in the 5300 block of Cameron Boulevard. Witnesses say shots were being exchanged between two cars before one crashed, causing damage to a utility pole and knocking out power to neighbors. Police have not released information on how many people were involved or wounded.

On Sunday afternoon, police investigated a shooting near the Claiborne underpass. Police say one victim, a woman, was shot in the arm near Laharpe Street. There's no word on a suspect or motive in this case.

Finally, Friday night, eight people were shot at a graduation party in the 6200 block of Eads Street in Gentilly. 15-year-old Tremaine Robertson was killed when an argument lead to a shooting. Seven others, including four women and three men ranging in ages between 19 and 30 were hit. All of those victims are expected to recover.
