Teen killed at brother's NOLA high school graduation party

NEW ORLEANS, La. (CBS - WWL) - What was supposed to be a happy celebration turned deadly when eight people were shot during a high school graduation party in Gentilly Friday night.

It happened just after 11 p.m. in the 6200 block of Eads Street. A 15-year-old was killed, and seven others were shot and wounding in the crossfire.

Instead of preparing to study engineering at Jackson State next year, JeShan Vail is preparing to bury his little brother, 15-year-old Tremaine Robertson.

Robertson was here from Houston to watch his brother walk at George Washington Carver High school's graduation.

"It was just a party, it was a celebration," said JeShan Vail. "It was suppose to be a graduation party for me for graduating."

Proud family and friends threw the party to celebrate the senior for graduated with honors in the top 10 of his class, but the happy celebration turned ugly when an argument lead to a barrage of gunfire.

"When I heard the pow pow pow, I said oh god, they shootin' outside," said neighbor Sandra Marshall.

Marshall, who lives across the street from where the shooting happened, was asleep when she suddenly woke to gunshots.

Police have not said if there was more than one shooter, but Marshall believes there was an exchange of gunfire. That is because she saw a man in her driveway near where she later found a bullet logged in the trunk of her car.

"His back was to me, I couldn't see him, but I saw a white shirt and jeans," said Marshall. "And he looked like he might have been loading up again."

Police say seven other people were also shot, including four women ranging in age between 19 and 30 and three men between the ages of 22 and 25.

Luckily though, all the victims are expected to be OK.

"It's so sad. I hate to see that," said Marshall.

Vail said he did not see anything and does not know what lead to the shooting, but he said he got a bad feeling when a few guests showed up to the party uninvited.

"It was mostly friends though, so whoever did what they did, we didn't know them," said Vail. "Never saw them and don't know them still to this day."

If you have any information about this shooting, you are asked to call NOLA Crimestoppers at 822-1111.
