Divorce proposal awaiting Gov. Jindal's signature

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) -Wendel Ray learned about a bill passed by the senate that could make it easier for spouses in domestic relationships.

He's a family and marriage counselor who deals with these situations everyday.  He thinks this bill may only work on part of the problem.

"It could be a very good thing, certainly to be able to speed thing up if the situation calls for it, in terms of the adjudication of a case, it could be valuable, it often is true though, the things we try to do to make it better, makes it worst, so I often have a hesitation about those kinds of changes" said Ray.

If a person has been abused, the bill will make the divorce final in just a short period of time.  Ray says that it rushes the process but slows down a person's emotions to their marriages, which is not always good.

"Why the divorce process takes as long as it does, is to give people time to breath, and to think, way the consequences of leaving a marriage" said Ray.

Ray says money and sex play a huge role in domestic violence and when it becomes too aggressive, you should leave the relationship.

"Domestic violence takes a lot of forms, sexual aggression or sexual components while it exist and I'm not minimizing it" said Ray.

If the bill is approved, it will take effect August first, Ray hopes that it will eventually help people dealing with domestic abuse heal and move on with their lives.
