Biedenharn Museum and Gardens to host "Dog Day in the Garden"

Posted: Updated:
The Biedenharn Museum and Gardens will ditch its "no dog policy" for one day next week.

Dogs are welcome at the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens during the second annual Dog Days in the Garden Saturday May 31 from 10:00 to 2:00 in ELsong Garden. Garden gates will open at 10:00, humans and their well behaved four-legged friends are invited to stroll garden paths, sniff flowers, and see old friends and make new ones.

Dog and humans can enjoy species specific refreshments including doggie biscuits and Coke floats. Booths in the garden will share information on spaying and neutering pets, pet adoption services in Northeast Louisiana, therapy dogs and more. Human visitors will enjoy Coke Floats and there will be pet related raffles.

Museum Director Ralph Calhoun says there have been a few changes to Dog Day from last year's first edition. "It was very hot on Dog Day last year so we are holding it in the spring instead of the Summer, and we are making it more of a morning event. We hope both of these considerations will mean we have a cooler more enjoyable event. We have also added a great extra opportunity. Amanda Leigh Photography will be on hand taking free pet portraits." Calhoun said, adding that "Free full resolution downloads of the portraits will be available after the event from Amanda Leigh Photography's online gallery."

All dogs must be leashed, have their vaccines and no other pets are allowed for this canine and human only event. Admission is $5 per person, plus $5 per dog. The canine portion of the admission goes to support PAWS of NELA in the mission to reduce and aid the population of unwanted and lost companion animals in our community and to support and encourage the positive interaction between pets and people.

The Biedenharn Museum and Gardens is located at 2000 Riverside Drive, Monroe, LA (the corner of Riverside and Forsythe). The museum is open to the public from 10 - 5 Tuesday through Saturday. Call 318-387-5281 for more information.
