A river walk could be coming to Downtown Monroe

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Along the Ouachita River there's a lot of potential and room for something fresh and new, like a river walk.

The Ouachita Riverfront Economic Commission and the Downtown Economic Development District are on track to see the dream become a reality. All they need now is funding from the state.

Brad Holloway of the Ouachita Development Commission says the idea of a walk is exactly what's needed to start the transformation of Downtown Monroe.

Washington and Walnut is listed as a top location for Monroe's proposed new arena. That would put the new arena right near the site of the river walk and the current Children's Museum.

Empty buildings would become retail space with apartments above.

The river walk is going to begin at the Warehouse No. 1 restaurant on Walnut Street and end right down the street at River and Rail Cantina. Both of the restaurants have riverside seating and say having a river walk will only mean more cash flowing in.

The City of Monroe has already given $60 thousand toward the project which was used to conduct a study on the flood wall.

The project would take three years and $3.5 million to complete. The Riverfront Development Commission is already in the first year of the project.
