Vintage trains roll through Monroe

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Many of us dream of seeing the wide open country, but imagine seeing it by train in your own private car. On Tuesday, the Association of Private Railroad Car Owners rolled through Monroe and we got to take a look inside the luxury cars.

They are second hand cars, but a first class way to travel. Each car is privately owned and Dave Hoffman has two of them.

Hoffman said his love of trains started as a  child, when he traveled to from Chicago to Los Angeles.

"They were the best way to get around. And that bug bit me and that spark has been there for a long time," Hoffman said.

He has invited family and friends on this journey. Their adventure began in New Orleans a few days ago and they're making their way to Gulf Port, Miss., before heading back New Orleans.

“We came across the big bridge, the Huey P. Long Bridge. There are beautiful sites and the sugar cane that was being raised down the way. It was new to us. It was like seeing the country first," Hoffman said.

Both of Hoffman’s cars were built in the 1950s. He had them refurbished and they now have all the modern amenities of a hotel. Every bedroom has its own bathroom and guests are served meals by stewards that are prepared by an executive chef.

'When you get on a train and relax, the time goes by so fast, you wonder, where did the time go." Hoffman said.

Hoffman said there's no other way to travel, but by train.

He said he takes about four trips a year in his private cars, but the rest of the year they're chartered to private clients.
