Schools to implement PARCC, End of Course

Posted: Updated:
MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Superintendent of Education John White said LEAP scores will be available Tuesday evening. This is only eight days before summer remediation begins. But there are a lot of changes in student standardize test this school year and going into the next.

There are only a few days left in the school year, but many students still don't know if they will have to attend summer school. For unknown reasons, the Department of Education is late to release LEAP scores.

But this year, students who fail the LEAP test will go to the next grade anyway after they complete summer school.

And next year will bring more challenges for students when third through eighth grades are tested with PARCC in English and math instead of leap.

PARCC was developed in a joint effort by several different states.

"Louisiana was one of the states involved in developing the PARCC assessment," Mary Duzan, Ouachita Parish Test Coordinator, said.

She said high school students will take the End of Course test. Unlike PARCC, End of Course was developed by Louisiana, only. But both tests are computerized and both test Common Core standards.

Duzan said computerized test are nothing new for the high school students, but it's a whole new ball game for the lower grades.

"It’s internet and it's technology. You can always have issue with that. And the other thing is that they are worried they might be testing a student’s technology ability instead of their core English language arts ability or their math ability," Duzan said.

Ouachita School System Director of Curriculum and Testing, Brenda Deason, said the computerized test could become costly.

"The dollars that it takes to be prepared  to do online testing; because in the past in our schools we felt very fortunate to have one computer lab in our schools and maybe two in our larger schools," Deason said.

Even with the concerns, both Duzan and Deason said with all change there are always some bumps in the road.

Deason said the school districts will have the choice to test third and fourth graders by paper this coming year, but fifth through twelfth grades will have to take their standardized tests on the computer.
