LaFourche vicious animal ordinance fails

Posted: Updated:

THIBODAUX, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The Lafourche Parish Council has rejected an ordinance that would impose an annual fee and other restrictions for owners of vicious animals.

Councilman John Arnold, the author, was the only yes vote for the ordinance Tuesday night.

Arnold argued the measure would hold animal owners responsible for their pets.

Arnold said the ordinance would be a "foot in the door" for other new animal laws as well.

But other councilmen and some residents were skeptical.

Under the parish ordinance, a dog is labeled dangerous if it bites or severely injures anyone, kills an animal or engages in behavior that requires a defensive action.
