Foul taste and smell at the tap to pass... in time

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Monroe residents have been emailing and calling KNOE 8 News since the middle of last week complaining about water with a foul odor and taste. But, city officials assure they water meets all health standards and is safe to drink.

Diane Kilpatrick says she started noticing the bad water last Wednesday. She says she called the water company and they told her they were sorry and they would send someone out to flush her lines. But, she says that never happened.

Since then, Kilpatrick and may Monroe businesses have switched to bottled water and are serving fountain drinks out of cans or two liter bottles.

Monroe Water Superintendent Sean Benton says the water is, and has always, been safe to drink. He says the odor and taste come from build up leaving the pipes and entering the water supply. He says recent hydrant flushing has made that a bigger issue. Benton adds, much of the city's water comes from Bayou Desiard, which is prone to a murky green algae this time of year.

Benton says by the middle of this week everything should be back to normal. But after a week of smelly water, residents like Kilpatrick were hoping for quicker results.
