Ashley & Union County not able to process gay marriage licenses

Posted: Updated:
CROSSETT, Ark. (KNOE 8 News) - A call to the Ashley and Union Counties clerks office reveals that the county can not process gay marriage licenses.

Regina Kersten, county clerk of Ashley County, tells KNOE 8 News that their computer system would not allow for either two females or two males to be entered into their systems in a marriage license.

She says licenses work like a contract with a male and female selection.  Only 1 male and 1 female can be chosen within the system.

Kersten says that no homosexual couples have applied for a marriage license so far.  She says they are working with their computer software company and the Association of Arkansas County.

When we talked with the Union County clerks office, officials there say they have the same issues with their computer systems.  They also say that they will be waiting for the state's Supreme court to issue a ruling on the matter before issuing licenses.
