Car kills wildlife officer looking for trespasser

Posted: Updated:
FULTON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi's wildlife agency says a wildlife officer looking for a possible trespasser near Fulton was hit and killed by a car.

Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks spokesman Jim Walker says 56-year-old Master Sgt. John Collum, of Fulton, had worked for the department since 1999, and was regional officer of the year in 2012.

Walker says the accident does not appear related to the call that Collum was investigating late Friday.

Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal
that the car skidded 300 feet after hitting Collum. He says the 19-year-old driver remained at the scene and is in custody but has not yet been charged.

Walker says Collum is survived by his wife, two sons and four grandchildren.
