New abortion rules head closer to passage

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - New abortion restrictions that would require doctors performing the procedure to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital are nearing final legislative passage.

The Senate health committee backed the bill without objection Wednesday. The measure sailed through the House, despite criticism it would shut down three of Louisiana's five abortion clinics.

Supporters say the measure would ensure women have access to proper care if they have complications. Opponents say the legislation by Monroe Rep. Katrina Jackson, a Democrat, would add medically unnecessary requirements designed to limit access.

The bill also would force women who take the abortion pill to meet the same 24-hour waiting period and ultrasound requirements as women who have surgical abortions.

The proposal moves to the Senate floor.
