Taxes passed to support Union Parish Schools

Posted: Updated:
UNION PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Union Parish Public Schools are in line to get a major upgrade after tax measures are passed in the May 3. election.

Cannon says that the passing of a sales tax and a bond measure last night will help better education in his school district.

After numerous attempts at trying to pass these propositions the school district was at the point of desperation going into this election.

Cannon says these dollars will make way for some major improvements.

The Superintendent is glad both taxes were passed by residents he says having one with out of the other just wouldn't have worked.

The 1% sales tax will go towards the funding of learning programs. The bond issue of up to $42.5 million, paid back through a 13.5 millage over 20 years will help rebuild schools in the district.

Cannon says there is a laundry list of things these tax dollars will help improve, first on the list are new buses.
