Big bucks in the Welding trade

Posted: Updated:
BASTROP, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Welders have the opportunity to make more than 60 thousand dollars a year or 15 thousand dollars in just three months.

That earning potential has welding instructors adamant about reaching out to high school seniors and adults who do not see a traditional college in their futures.

Daryl Watt has been welding for more than 20 years, he shares his knowledge of the trade to students at Louisiana Delta Community College in Bastrop.

Daryl says welding is a ticket to success for many he teaches. He says he has set up his students with jobs right out of the classroom. Giving them an opportunity to explore the country while making some pretty good money.

The program offers dual enrollment to Bastrop High School students.

Seniors Branden Jackson and Kevarious Payton will receive their high school diplomas May 16. After that they will head to Little Rock for their first jobs.

They credit the program for developing something in them they didn't know they had.

Marchello Damon has reaped the benefits of the program, just recently he got a chance to work in North Carolina making more than $10 thousand  in four months. Before registering for the program he worked in a chicken plant. He says he never traveled outside of Louisiana, until now.
