Vance McAllister will not seek re-election

Posted: Updated:
MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Vance McAllister will not seek re-election. One Monday, he confirmed the news that many have been speculated for the past three weeks.

Representative McAllister and his wife Kelly were about to board a plane headed to Washington D.C. when we spoke to them about his decision to not seek re-election. They said this is this best decision for their family and their marriage is stronger than ever.

McAllister said even though he will not run in November, he will finish the rest of his term.

"I'm not going to allow the people of the state of Louisiana to have to go through another million dollar election. I'm not going to leave the seat open for them not to have a voice. I can still do the job that needs to be done and I can probably do it as good as anybody. And don't think I am not going to fight for what is right for the fifth district and sit idle for the next eight months. I'm going to take it to them," McAllister said. The freshman congressman was rocked by scandal when this video of him kissing a woman other than his wife surfaced about three weeks ago. There were only three people who had access to the security footage, including his district office manager, Leah Gordon.

McAllister said he still doesn't know who leaked the video.

“We never intended on firing Leah. We were not even doing it, the council was doing their investigation. And she went silent and turned in her resignation," McAllister said.

After the scandal surfaced, many top ranking republicans called for his resignation.

The congressman said there is no ill feelings toward those officials.

"They need to reevaluate themselves, but I forgive them. At the end of the day they don't pay for my bills and they don't tend to me and my family," McAllister said.

McAllister said he hopes a good candidate will emerge and work hard in Washington.

But he said that person has a tough job ahead of them.

"I've said it, it’s not a fun job if you do it right. And it's a dysfunctional mess in D.C. and one man on the bottom of the totem pole, being there three or four days a week, is not going to change that dysfunctional mess," McAllister said.

We received statements from high ranking republican officials, including Governor Bobby Jindal and the Louisiana GOP Chairman. They said they would have rather seen a resignation but they are glad the situation is resolved.

We also spoke with some state delegates including Jay Morris and Robert Johnson and they say this was very good decision.

We did have the opportunity to ask Representative McAllister if his political career is over and he said only time will tell.
