Plans advance for Jefferson Parish jail

Posted: Updated:

JENNINGS, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Officials in Jefferson Davis Parish are still moving forward on plans for a new jail though a location has not been officially made public.

The police jury adopted a resolution Wednesday giving President Donald Woods authority to enter into any contractual obligations connected to the proposed jail and related capital outlay funds from the state.

Parish voters will be asked on May 3 to approve a new 10-year, half-cent sales tax to help fund the operation and maintenance of the new facility, including the cost to feed and house 200 inmates. The tax would bring in $2.1 million to $2.3 million a year.
