Dean Hart Jr. granted bail

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Monroe businessman accused of taking his wife hostage resulting in a stand-off with police is granted bail.

Bail for Dean Hart Jr. was set at $132,000. He is also required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet, hand over his passport, and he is ordered to stay away from the alleged victim.

The courtroom felt more like a trial than a bond hearing. The attorneys cross examined the only witness, a Monroe Police Department investigator, and at times it felt hostile.

But defense attorney Glen Petersen said he is pleased with the outcome.

"The bond is fair. We can talk about the amounts all day long, but what the fact of the matter is, he is still engaged in treatment and we are excited about that,” Petersen said.

During questioning a police investigator described his interview with Barbie Hart, the alleged rape victim, how Hart Jr. pointed guns at police officers during the 7-hour stand-off and how Hart Jr.’s second wife said there was physical violence during their marriage as well.

The prosecution claims Hart has a history of violence and little regard for the law. They said he is a danger to himself and to the community.

The defense presented evidence that Barbie Hart hid information from the police, had ample access to a phone and other people during her alleged kidnapping, and they said there is video evidence from Hart Jr.’s home that contradicts Barbie’s allegations.

The defense questioned the thoroughness of the investigation and the police investigator admitted it was still ongoing.

"There is a lot more to come and as he put it ‘It’s still under investigation,’ and it is still under investigation with us as well," Petersen said.

Hart Jr.’s attorneys said they should have him out of jail today.

The attorney’s will be back in court on July 31 for a hearing. A trial date has not been set.
