West Monroe churches worship at sunrise

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - For the first time in many years, the West Monroe community gathered for a sunrise service in Kiroli Park.

Hosted by Cedar Crest Baptist Church, Christ Church, First United Methodist Church, First West and The Pentecostals, the service began at 6:30 Sunday morning.

Pastor Jon Tellifero, with the First United Methodist Church of West Monroe, said Easter Sunrise Services are celebrated throughout the globe.

"The reason we do this at sunrise and you can go around the world at sunrise, no matter where sunrise happens around the world, you will find Christian people gathering at sunrise because that is when Jesus rose,"Tellifero said.

Holly and David White are members of Cedar Crest Baptist Church.

They say they were more than willing to attend the early morning service.

"I figure if the lord could die on the cross and go through what all he went through for me, I at least could get up and come worship him," David said.

The Whites also said the community effort is a blessing.

"I feel it’s great that the churches came together for this. That they don't let their differences in religion, they all come together to worship one God," David said.

And Tellifero agrees. He said West Monroe is fortunate to have a community that wants to worship together.
