Dusty Gates sworn in as Union Parish Sheriff

UNION PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Dusty Gates is officially the top cop in Union Parish. 

Before the April 5. Election, he was chosen as the interim sheriff after long time sheriff, Bob Buckley passed.

Gates ran in the April 5. Election, winning the race with 74% of the vote.

He says he's already started making changes in areas he believes the department can improve in.

The 39 year law enforcement veteran is not new to crime in Union Parish. Gates has worked with the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Department and is retired from the Louisiana State Police Department.

After Buckley requested Gates join his department, he returned to law enforcement.

Gates says he's ready to make Union Parish a safer place.

Farmerville Mayor, Stein Baughman and residents of the parish says his the right one to fill the shoes of Bob Buckley.
