MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - An associate Louisiana Tech art professor has been working with a group of students to revitalize the art district in downtown Monroe. Nolan Crane shows us the progress that has taken place and people's reactions.

After working around the clock for two months, six students and an associate professor from Louisiana Tech are nearing completion on this mural located in downtown Monroe. Some people say the transformation has been a miracle.

"In February when we first started working on the wall it took a lot of effort to get it to even a point that we can paint on it. It was very rough, there were a lot of left over armatures from when the buildings connected," said Nick Bustamante.

The owner of Luna Blue Yoga is happy to have this Black Bayou-inspired masterpiece on her wall.

"We're thrilled to have it out there because it's just bringing life downtown. It's really brightening up, giving us color down here," said Batterford.

The painting is called finding home. In addition to the swamp there are several other focal points like chandeliers to create a warm environment that makes this wall seem like a house.

"He's brought in the animals of this area into the painting as well," said Batteford.

The artists have received a lot of attention for their colorful work. They want this to be a gateway for downtown and something everyone can take pride in.

"What we hope to have happen is for the public to connect to it and so it's just not my painting or the artist's mural, it's the community's mural and that they can identify with it," said Bustamante.

Black Bayou is a Louisiana treasure and now the mural is a treasure for everyone in Northeast Louisiana.

The Monroe downtown renaissance group is funding the art project. The mural is located at 428 Desiard Street is expected to be completed next month.
