HAMMOND, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - State police say a Tangipahoa Parish deputy shot and killed a man near Hammond in what started as a report of a domestic disturbance.

Trooper Greg Marchand says 48-year-old Michael C. Nichols Jr. was found holding a knife and standing over his injured 70-year-old mother, Barbara J. Nichols, inside a home Tuesday afternoon when deputies arrived at the scene.

Marchand says state police detectives are investigating the shooting.

He says troopers will turn its findings over to the Tangipahoa Parish District Attorney's Office.
