Fresh out of the gate Monroe Schools Turf project over budget

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A field turf project for three Monroe City Schools will cost a bit more than originally planned.

The field turf was to be installed after residents in Monroe passed a bond issue in a November election.  The $58.8 million bond was easily passed by voters.

In a recommendation letter from ARE Consultants to the Monroe City School Board, W. Sherwood Bailey explains the increased costs.

His letter says, "The value of the synthetic turf fields is $3,000,000 or $1,000,000 per school.  In the base bid the remaining costs are the tracks, field events and additional drainage necessary to facilitate the track and field system, which account for approximately $2,400,000.  Difficult drainage conditions at all three schools account for the bids being higher than expected.  All three schools are receiving completely revamped drainage systems in the vicinity of the tracks, fields, and field events to alleviate existing drainage problems."

The letter also recommends the board award the project to Hellas Construction, Inc.  The bid of $5,462,000 was the low bid for the project.
