Delhi council wants investigation of mayor

Posted: Updated:

DELHI, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Four Delhi aldermen are asking for an investigation into Mayor Lynn Lewis, accusing him of illegal spending of the town's money.

Aldermen Larry Rancher, Bob Benson, Henry Washington and Caroline Christman sent a three-page letter detailing their allegations to Richland Parish Sheriff Lee Harrell and Louisiana Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera asking them to investigate the accusations.

The aldermen claim Lewis broke Louisiana law by spending beyond 5 percent of budgeted money, spending town money without council approval, failing to provide them with financial statements and failing to publish minutes according to the law.

Lewis denied he misspent any town money. Lewis said any perceived problems could have been solved had the council acted on amending the budget.
