Lafayette airport tax headed to council

Posted: Updated:

LAFAYETTE, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - An election for a 1 percent sales tax to fund a new terminal and other improvements at Lafayette Regional Airport is on its way to the City-Parish Council.

The airport commission Wednesday authorized a resolution asking the Lafayette City-Parish Council to call an election Dec. 6.

If the council agrees to place the measure on the ballot, Lafayette Parish voters would be asked to levy a 1 percent sales tax to be collected for eight months, from April 1, 2015, through Nov. 30, 2015.

The tax is expected to generate about $36 million toward the $90 million needed to build a new airport terminal and the infrastructure needed to support the airport.
